The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has announced a ceasefire in response to Abdullah Öcalan’s appeal.
However, Syria’s People’s Protection Units (YPG), another involved organization, stated that Öcalan’s appeal does not concern them.
Turkish propaganda claims that ethno-Islamist Turkey will contact the United States regarding the YPG, the primary component of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s call for the dissolution of the organization and for all groups to lay down their arms was seemingly accepted by the PKK, which announced a ceasefire, stating that it would comply with the appeal.
The YPG, which the Turks claim were also addressed by Öcalan’s call, responded:
“Öcalan’s appeal concerns the PKK, not us.”
Following the YPG’s reaction to the appeal, Hande Fırat, the Ankara correspondent of the Hürriyet newspaper, who joined a CNN Türk broadcast, conveyed what is being discussed in Ankara’s corridors.
She used the following expressions:
“The organization [PKK] uses the term ‘ceasefire,’ but this is the language of the organization.
“A state does not declare a ceasefire; a state makes a truce with another state.
“This is the clear picture from Ankara’s perspective. Secondly, it seems as if Öcalan’s leadership is being set as a precondition.
“How things will unfold in the coming days matters, but Öcalan’s views will be reflected in the congress.
“This will happen through a written text from Öcalan; his ideas will be reflected in some way at the congress.
“Other options are not acceptable. [That is, the Turks are not releasing Öcalan so far.]
“The important thing is that the congress must be convened as soon as possible.
“It is expected to be held within 1-2 months. For a Turkey without terrorism, the organization must dissolve and lay down its arms.
“This will also provide an ‘honorable exit’ for the ‘terrorist fighters’ [i.e., Kurdish guerrillas].”
“Ankara saw this as a threat.
“The YPG has ties with the U.S. and Israel.
“They want to use the YPG and continue this effort.
“The threat Ankara anticipated has materialized.
“The YPG did not obey this order, even though it was stated that it concerns ‘all groups.’
“They responded: ‘We are not involved.’
“What does this show? There is a YPG that does not take instructions from Öcalan.
“Internal discussions have also begun within the organization.
“Some question Mazloum Kobani.
“Some say the founder of the organization gave orders and they must be followed.
“On the other hand, some say, ‘We are separate.'”
“There are two important elements.
“One is that Ankara does not communicate with Syria through Öcalan.
“It communicates with Israel and the U.S.
“In this context, in the future process, the Syrian government is talking to Turkey, but it may enter a more cooperative environment.
“Turkey is discussing the situation in Syria with the U.S.
“Meanwhile, there are developments in the White House.
“The U.S., which removed Zelensky from the stage in minutes, should not forget that it can get rid of the YPG in one minute, just as it did with Zelensky.
“We saw this yesterday. The YPG must see this and respond to Öcalan’s appeals.
“What will Israel’s stance be in the region?
“We are offering you an honorable exit; let stability return to the region.
“If you fight me with words, I will continue to fight you.
“In other words, peace with those who bury their weapons, war with those who do not; the effort to eradicate terrorism from its source will continue.”
It is evident from the above that the Turks recognize that their attempt to have the Kurds surrender to them is not working so far, despite Öcalan’s appeals.
The Syrian Kurds do not listen to Öcalan and make it clear that they are not part of the PKK.
Turkish propaganda spreads the idea that the megalomaniac Erdoğan will convince U.S. and Israel to “abandon” the Kurds.
Neo-Ottoman Turkey fosters the illusion that Israel will heed Erdoğan, despite their cold war-like relations, and that it will “sell out” its Kurdish shield in Syria and the broader Fertile Crescent for a supposed stability of neo-Ottoman inspiration.
Turkey demands that Israel accept a neo-Ottoman hegemony in the region, and it demands that the U.S. accept the same, thereby making Israel subservient to Turkey.
Obviously, the Turks have the same expectations from Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. However, particularly regarding the latter, they have repeatedly made it clear that they will never again accept Ottoman rule.
The Greeks, meaning Greece and Cyprus, must take a clear stand in favor of their allies —Israelis, Kurds, and Arabs— against neo-Ottomanism.
Will Greece’s great ally, also the ancient Egypt, be ready to defend the alliance of ancient nations —the Eastern Mediterranean alliance— against the invading and occupying Turkish horde?
