According to The Wall Street Journal, the Iran-backed Houthis are requiring $51 billion from Saudi Arabia in order to cease their attacks.

The Houthis also want Riyadh to recognize them as the legitimate government of Yemen.

Both demands would constitute a clear victory for the Houthis, and it is doubtful whether they will be accepted by the Saudis, who lack an easy solution to the Houthi threat from Yemen.

Against the backdrop of the Republicans’ electoral defeat, America’s adversaries may perceive the outcome as a weakening of leadership and as an opportunity to demand more. HOW?

The Houthis demanded $51 billion and recognition as the rulers of Yemen when Saudi Arabia asked what would be required to end hostilities, according to The Wall Street Journal.

This specific Houthi demand for the payment of $51 billion as a prerequisite for a ceasefire highlights vividly the deeper pathologies governing security and stability in the Middle East.

On one hand, the substitution of diplomatic negotiations with economic blackmail and “ransom” demonstrates the dominance of a medieval conception of peacemaking.

Within this context, a truce is not treated as the outcome of mutual compromise, respect for international law, or political will, but as a commodity for sale, where armed coercion supplants all institutional diplomatic practice.

On the other hand, this development exposes the limits and the incapacity of the leadership of Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman.

Despite costly military operations, grandiose declarations, and regional initiatives -such as the Mecca Agreement and broader understandings among the region’s authoritarian rulers- Riyadh appears unable to secure its borders and impose effective deterrence.

The inability to stem a non-state actor underlines the substantive vacuum behind the regional agreements of local despots, which are often consumed by public relations maneuvers without delivering a sustainable security architecture.
